# 3:1.6 Fixation

Legumes are able to obtain a portion of their nitrogen demand through fixation of atmospheric $$N\_2$$ performed by rhizobia living in association with the plant. In exchange for nitrogen, the plant supplies the bacteria with carbohydrates.
